I was thinking this morning that- if by some strange miracle this site’s content were to survive another century or two- all of the personal commentary and banter here would be rendered meaningless, since every person who knew me or was known of me will long since have been absent from the face of our planet. And yet the photos, maps, videos and narrative depictions of the trails themselves would retain currency and relevance.
And if the gods of biology fashioned me to outlive every other human who drew breath at the moment of my birth, the span of my existence here would still only amount to a mere century, give or take. And yet the evidence of the passing of that same 100 years would be scarcely discernible on the etched surfaces of the mountains we walk.
So while we may humor ourselves that we hold a position of “dominion” over the other forms of life on this planet, we are none of us masters of time.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking,R. Waters
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.
